[Separation Anxiety ‘Drama’ : How to Help Your Child Deal with It?]

The school is going to start in less than 2 days. Are you ready for the ‘drama’?

Here are few tips you can try to help your little one dealing with his anxiety on the first day of school.

Before School

1. Introduce school activities at homeLet your kid get use to few school activities such as drawing pictures, story telling and   circle time.

2. Visit school and classroomThe reason why every school is having Orientation Day is to let the students be familiar with school environment, how big the school is and what an actual classroom will look like.

3. Meeting with teacherMeeting a stranger for the first time may be an unpleasant experience for your kid. Introduce his teacher could help him reduce his anxiety on the first day of school later when he recognise some familiar faces.

4.  Be positive. Your child can sense if you are feeling guilty or worried leaving them at school. Be positive and confident. Tell them fun things about school such as meeting lots of friends, interesting activities, nice and kind teachers.

During school

1. Reintroduce teacher. Your child might have forget how his teacher look like when you introduce her last time, reintroduce and let your child know that you trust the teacher to take care of him.

2. Bring ‘friends’ from home. Let your child bring something from home that make him comfortable. When most toys are not allowed to bring to school, he can bring a lunch box with his favourite character on it, a handkerchief that he always use or a small stuffed animal that he can hang on his bag.

3. Leave immediately when it is time to go. Give your child a sweet and short goodbye. Salam, kiss and tell him you will see him in few hours. Do not linger outside the classroom, it doesn’t help your child to reduce his anxiety.

4. Express ease with leaving. Make a funny goodbye face, smile will tell him that he is going to be fine. Control your emotion and avoid showing sad or unhappy face to your child.

5. Learn other kids’ and teacher’s name. It make school seems more familiar to your child when you know a little bit about it. So you can ask about them when you fetch them up later.

"Crying is one way a child telling you his feeling."

It is fine if your child still cry after a week of school. Crying is one way a child telling you his feeling. Avoid comparing him to other children but give him encouragement. Consider rewarding your child (e.g smiley sticker if he is not crying on the day).
